Alex's 20 TIPS for Improving Your English (Advanced)

1. Start your own blog, using English only ( www.blogger.com {FREE})

2. Write a news diary. It doesn’t matter what you write. Write something everyday. Later a teacher can check it for errors. JUST WRITE!

3. Listen to English music.

4. Read lyrics to a song you like.

5. Find volunteer work you can do. You may find something that will allow you to interact with the community and practice your English in real world situations. Follow this link for many opportunities to volunteer.

Opportunities/page12221.aspx

6. Only search on the web in English.

7. Read a book you've already read or seen the movie of in your own language.

8. Label things in your home with small signs showing the English word.

9. Go to talk time at Oak Park on Vista (CWI ABE) On Mondays & Fridays

10. Find a language exchange partner (Email me, and I can suggest where)

12. Make your own flash cards for a subject you are studying.

13. Make sure you pronounce the s that is on the end of certain words: works, pays, walks, cats, dollars, etc. This is one of the most common mistakes ESL speakers make. By saying the s where appropriate, you can make a quick improvement on the fluidity of your speech. Also, condition yourself to master him/her he/she.

14. Some languages use a lot of jaw muscles. Be careful not to use these muscles too much when speaking English. Your jaw should feel relaxed most of the time.

15. Listen to PRI/NPR radio 91.5 FM

16. Read an English book. Choose a book that you can understand 90% of everything in. Chances are, the other 10% you can figure out through the context. Don’t be embarrassed to read kid books.

17. Sing karaoke using English.

18. Watch English movies with English subtitles

19. Try and learn at least 5 new words a day. That’s 150 words a month, 1,825 per year, 9,125 in 5 years.

20. If there is a word you just can’t pronounce, find another word that means the same thing. Make use of a thesaurus http://thesaurus.com/
